As the first Scary Movie in 13 years, this one has a lot of ground to cover, and the trailer makes it clear that the movie is going to try to cover a whole lot of it. Aside from Scream, we also get references to Halloween, Ma, Sinners, Weapons, The Substance, Wednesday, M3GAN, Get Out, and Terrifier. Like the Scream reboots before it, it seems like the movie will be taking some aim at the concept of “elevated horror,” but with the same weapons it has always had in its arsenal.
According to the film’s official synopsis, “Marlon Wayans (“Shorty”), Shawn Wayans (“Ray”), Anna Faris (“Cindy”), and Regina Hall (“Brenda”) reunite in Scary Movie alongside returning favorites and fresh faces to slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and every “final chapter” that absolutely isn’t final. Nothing is sacred. No trope survives. Every line gets crossed. The Wayans are back to cancel the Cancel Culture.” Based on the world around us, it seems like the Cancel Culture—in the sense of powerful people facing adverse consequences for their bad acts—might already be on hiatus, but we suppose we’ll see for sure when Scary Movie opens on June 12.
