Despite boycotts, Scream 7 achieves record-breaking opening at the weekend box office

Scream 7 opened to the highest box office gross of any Scream movie.

Despite boycotts, Scream 7 achieves record-breaking opening at the weekend box office

After years of controversies and employee turnover, and more recent boycotts and bad reviews, Scream 7 still opened as the number one movie in the United States. The movie managed to open to $64.1 million in the U.S. and to $97.2 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing opening in the history of the franchise. Its worldwide gross is already basically what Scream 4 made during its entire theatrical run back in 2011. It’s also the first Scream movie to open to more than $30 million abroad. 

As Deadline points out, a not-insignificant factor in this gross is the fact that Scream 7 played in IMAX, which boasts ticket costs significantly higher than that of an average movie ticket. It was also part of the plan to “eventize” the release, in the words of Spyglass CEO Gary Barber, as the film brought back Neve Campbell and as 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the Scream franchise. Of course, it bears mentioning that Scream 7 was the only major, IP-driven release of the weekend. The only other new release that even made it into the top ten of the weekend was Twenty One Pilots: More Than We Ever Imagined, a concert film following a Twenty One Pilots show in Mexico City. 

Elsewhere, Goat and Wuthering Heights remained in the top three releases of the weekend for their third weekend in theaters, though Wuthering Heights‘ gross dropped more than 50%, bringing in just shy of $7 million domestically this weekend. EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert actually grossed about 9% more than it did last weekend, though it opened in about 1600 more theaters.
