Simon Kinberg says the Gambit movie is in play again

The Gambit standalone movie has had a somewhat troubled production. Channing Tatum was crowned the new Remy LeBeau in May 2014, and that news was soon followed by confirmation that the movie had secured a screenwriter. Then there were concerns that Tatum had just been bluffing about wanting to play the Cajun X-Man, which he quickly rebuffed. The production has also had trouble hanging on to directors, as Edge Of Tomorrow’s Doug Liman replaced Rupert Wyatt (The Gambler, appropriately enough) last fall. All of this shuffling proved a bit much for Fox to deal with, and the studio pulled Gambit from its October 2016 release. But producer Simon Kinberg is now suggesting the movie could finally start filming next year.

While attending the Saturn Awards, Kinberg briefly chatted with Indiewire about the state of Marvel films. The producer shared some progress notes on Wolverine 3 and Deadpool 2, the latter of which will start filming early next year. When asked for a Gambit update, Kinberg said “we have great script on that and hope to shoot that movie at the beginning or spring of next year.” So it sounds like Tatum can resume his classes with a Cajun dialect coach (assuming he’s not just going to wing it).
