Since 1998, 2,000 optimistic mothers have named their babies Beyoncé
According to the most recent Social Security data, there are nearly 2,000 Beyoncés living in the United States. Until 1998—the year Destiny’s Child released its debut full-length—there was only one, the Beyoncé Knowles, supreme being of beauty and light, whose name is a bastardization of her mother’s maiden name, Beyincé. Then, starting that year, our fair and bootylicious nation saw a boom in baby Beyoncés, with about 1,000 offspring optimistically earning the name between 2000 and 2004. The name has since fallen off a bit, with Fusion aptly estimating that’s because “while it’s one thing to name your child after a celebrity, it’s another to name her after a full-blown mononym superstar” a la Cher or Madonna. Still, in 2013 (the most recent year for which data is available), 28 babies were born into the Beyoncé moniker.
It’s unclear how the name “Blue Ivy” has been trending. Considering there were probably zero Blue Ivys before Blue Ivy Carter was born to Beyoncé in 2012, we’re guessing “up.”
