Unlike Michael Che, SNL UK's Weekend Update has lots to say about Shane Gillis

Further widening the perceived boldness gap between the U.S. and U.K. iterations of Saturday Night Live‘s fake news Weekend Update segment, SNL UK‘s Ania Magliano didn’t hold back about the American show’s widely criticized booking of third-time host Shane Gillis last week. In contrast to U.S. Update anchor Michael Che’s diplomatic and/or issue-dodging lack of response to Gillis calling women “whores” for wearing shorts during his monologue (Che essentially says he was too busy promoting his new Netflix special to think about it) Magliano used her desk time to do a double-shot of jokes aimed at right at Gillis.

In a story about an Oktoberfest amusement ride giving out free bike shorts to female riders to guard against creepy men taking upskirt photos, Magliano, with her signature cheeky camera stare-down, noted, “Wearing the gym shorts will protect women from being upskirted, but it does make them vulnerable to something much worse.” The punchline flash of a mid-monologue photo of Gillis brought knowingly uproarious cheers from the English studio audience.

Magliano continued going after the MAGA-beloved stand-up (who was fired for making similarly crappy jokes shortly after being hired by SNL and SNL UK producer Lorne Michaels in 2019). In response to Gillis’ live f-word during a Dr. Seuss sketch on that same show, Magliano addressed Gillis  (and restrictive American late-night broadcast policy) directly, noting with obvious glee, “Oh, Shane. You’re not allowed to say that, you stupid fucking cunt.”

Che, meanwhile, continues to toe the Lorne Michaels line that booking the boorishly bigoted Gillis to appeal to his bro-demographic is worth subjecting the American audience to his particular line in misogyny, racism, and homophobia. Said Che in the aftermath of Gillis’ appearance, “That’s comedy. It’s like, you think it’s funny and some people don’t.” Clearly, Ania Magliano falls in the latter camp.
