James Austin Johnson's Trump invades SNL UK

Saturday Night Live's hiatus allows JAJ's erratically insane head of state to wander into a new SNL studio.

James Austin Johnson's Trump invades SNL UK

Akin to a restless, malign spirit deprived of his weekly fix of horrified/amused viewers, SNL‘s current two-week break saw James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump wander all the way across the Atlantic Ocean (as it’s called for now) to seek out new Saturday Night Lives to haunt. In Saturday’s SNL UK cold open, George Fouracres’ Northern-chipper British PM Andy Burnham assures Freddie Meredith’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy that English aid is coming, but that “They are being delivered by Evri, so if you’re not home, they’ll leave them with the country next door.” (From context, British private package delivery is substandard as well.)

But the Ukrainian President’ s complaint about the U.S. cutting off his beleaguered country’s access to Elon Musk’s Starlink internet makes the mistake of speaking the name of one Donald Trump, who appears, to surprised applause, in the form of original flavor Saturday Night Live‘s own James Austin Johnson. Claiming he got the “say my name and I appear” trick from his “good friend” Beetlejuice, JAJ’s Trump clocked the ghastly duo’s other similarity, “sex pest—allegedly. They can’t prove he did that stuff.”

The melding of fake heads of state saw Trump, typically, steamrolling the ensuing interaction, with Johnson’s pitch-perfect Trump revealing he’s come to see “his favorite comedian, currently performing at the High Court in the role of defendant.” He brushes off Zelenskyy by promising he and his other good pal Putin have been talking about him (“Not in a nice way”), and then pitches a job swap between himself and the flummoxed Burnham.

The idea is hardly the most insane one the actual Trump’s come out with lately, even if his grasp of English current affairs is predictably ungrounded in any nation’s reality. The solution for the “small boats” immigration situation is, naturally, “big, beautiful boats,” while the ongoing Man City crisis sees Trump musing on the Epstein-like imagined glories of Lady City. (“All access, no questions asked.”) As to that guy who fed himself to a zoo tiger, Johnson’s Trump could only marvel, “I’m team tiger. I like all orange predators.”

Abandoning the sketch, and possibly sanity, entirely, JAJ’s Trump then wandered center-stage to ramble about his plan to fix the [checks internet real quick] beloved British candy Percy Pig’s controversial new redesign before breaking the fourth wall to complain that SNL UK doesn’t have one guy who can do a passable Donald Trump. “Some of these people went to RADA!,” Trump bellowed, with Fouracres nudging sheepish castmate Meredith, before discovering to his delight that he’s allowed to swear on British late-night TV.

“Mr. President, do you have a point?,” Fouracres’ Burnham finally intercedes, with Trump answering, “Not usually, no.” After promising Zelenskyy anything “provided it’s not help with war” and pleading not to have to return to the awaiting Midterm elections massacre he and his GOP enablers are facing, Trump, as he’s done in his own country’s iteration of SNL so, so often, joined Fouracres and Meredith in a harmonious “Live, from London, it’s Saturday Night!” This Trump, at least, managed to stay on-message for an entire sentence.
