Whether or not you believe virtually everything you read, you can count on this one: the This Is Spinal Tap sequel really is happening, and it’s coming pretty soon. Distribution company Bleecker Street has won the rights to Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. The film will get a wide release on September 12. The film also shared a first teaser, which you can check out below.
Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer will all reprise their roles in the sequel, which sees the band reuniting for a concert after a 15-year hiatus. Rob Reiner has also returned to direct, and will also direct on-screen as the documentarian Martin “Marty” DiBergi. Elton John, Trisha Yearwood, Paul McCartney, and Garth Brooks are all set to make cameos in the film, according to a press release. Last year, it was also reported that Questlove was expected to cameo in the project, but perhaps plans have changed on that front. Fran Drescher, John Michael Higgins, Paul Shaffer, Don Lake, Nina Conti, Griffin Matthews, Kerry Godliman and Chris Addison are also listed among the cast.
“We feel privileged for the opportunity to work with Rob Reiner and the brilliant minds behind the original This Is Spinal Tap, and to be part of a film that has resonated with so many,” CEO of Bleecker Street Andrew Karpen and president of Bleecker Street Kent Sanderson say in a press statement. “This Is Spinal Tap isn’t just a movie — it’s a cultural touchstone that pioneered the mockumentary genre and left an indelible mark on both film and music. Returning to this world through Spinal Tap II is an extraordinary chance to celebrate its legacy while creating something fresh for both new and devoted audiences,” they added.
The original This Is Spinal Tap is, of course, a comedy classic, something that Bleecker Street is keenly aware of. The distributor is also planning to rerelease a restored version of the original 1984 film this summer, giving audiences a chance to revisit the fictional band’s lore before they come back for more.
