Syfy announces Sharknado Week as a challenge to Shark Week
Given the fact the sequel to Sharknado–Syfy’s surprise pop-culture phenomenon from last July–was given such a tossed off name, Sharknado 2: The Second One, it seemed as if Syfy was banking on name-recognition alone to carry the sequel to its premiere on July 30. Instead, Syfy has opted to take a swipe at Discovery Channel’s long-running Shark Week with the announcement of its very own Sharknado Week two weeks in advance of Discovery’s summer pillar.
Given that Syfy has put the emphasis of this theme-week on its shark-related content while almost entirely ignoring the vast “-nado” portion it could surely pull from, the end result of “Sharknado Week” appears to be focused on four evenings worth of programming. As a lead-up to the premiere of Sharknado 2, Syfy will air Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark on Saturday, July 26, followed on July 27 but Sharkmania: The Top 15 Biggest Baddest Bloodiest Bites, a documentary that brings together two of America’s favorite things: gruesome shark attacks and lists. July 30 will see the premiere of Sharknado 2: The Second One, a film that now features Andy Dick, and closing out the week will be Roger Corman’s Sharktopus Vs. Pteracuda on August 2. This still leaves time for Syfy to fill those open days with masterpieces of tornado theater Twister and The Wizard Of Oz, but those have likely been omitted due to the lack of requisite wordplay in their titles.
