Terrence Malick will make two movies next year
Fueled by the attention that The Tree Of Life received, spite for Sean Penn, intoxication with Christian Bale, or some delirious cocktail of all three, Terrence Malick is entering the most prolific era of his career, with plans to shoot two entire films back to back next year, rather than his usually allotted single frame of a wheat field. FilmNation made the announcement via press release today, backing up those earlier reports that Malick would follow up his post-production work on his drama with Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem, and Rachel Weisz by immediately jumping into another movie with Christian Bale. That film is now titled Lawless and is confirmed to star Ryan Gosling, with Bale, Rooney Mara, Haley Bennett, and Cate Blanchett rounding out the cast. And as is Malick’s usual wont, there are zero story details for either it or the film Malick plans to shoot next, Knight Of Cups, which will also star Bale and Blanchett, plus Isabel Lucas (though for what it's worth, Lawless does seem to be the movie that Christian Bale was filming while being distracting at this year’s Austin City Limits festival). And ordinarily we’d say we have plenty of space to speculate, and meanwhile contemplate our relative place in the timeline of the universe, but the hours definitely seem to be growing shorter now.
