The Monuments Men has also been delayed to 2014
This year’s crowded awards season continues to become less so, as George Clooney’s The Monuments Men has become the latest prestige film to miss its scheduled release by moving from Dec. 18 to a yet-to-be-determined date in 2014. Much like the delays for Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf Of Wall Street (bumped from November to Christmas Day), Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher (pushed from December to another TBD date in 2014), and Grace Of Monaco (rage-eaten by Harvey Weinstein), The Monuments Men “just didn’t have enough time,” Clooney tells the L.A. Times, adding, “If any of the effects looked cheesy, the whole movie would look cheesy. We simply don't have enough people to work enough hours to finish it.” And while it would be very easy to, say, just set a bunch of G.I. Joes on fire and call it a film, this is why George Clooney is the director and not us.
Anyway, although delaying the movie—in which the all-star, Oscar-baiting ensemble of Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, John Goodman, and Cate Blanchett participate in an Oscar-baiting WWII story about stealing art back from the Nazis—could definitely hurt those Oscar chances, owing to the inability of elderly Oscar voters to remember anything from more than a month ago, Clooney is characteristically unruffled by it. “All we’ve ever said, from the very beginning, is that we wanted to make a commercial, non-cynical piece of entertainment,” Clooney said, who is likely generally not worried about anything, ever.
