If you aren’t getting enough Gilead from turning on the news every day, Hulu has you covered. (Although, if that is the case, you may want to do some serious self-reflection.) Just as The Handmaid’s Tale prepares to wrap up June’s (Elisabeth Moss) tale after a harrowing eight years, The Testamentsis gearing up to unleash more horrors into the world. The upcoming series—an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel of the same name—just found a third star to round out its trio of leads. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Newcomer Lucy Halliday will be joining Chase Infiniti (Agnes) and Ann Dowd (Aunt Lydia, a reprisal of her role from The Handmaid’s Tale) as Daisy, a Canadian teenager who discovers that she has connections to the Republic of Gilead.
The Testaments is set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, but its roots go back several years into the past. Despite stalling production of the original series’ sixth and final season by three years, Hulu and MGM were quick to snatch up rights to the Atwood sequel before it was even published. The Handmaid’s Tale creator Bruce Miller has reportedly been working on the show for “several years” now, and stepped down as showrunner on The Handmaid’s Tale to focus on The Testaments in 2023. In an interview at the time, Miller told THRthat he was “trying to lay the groundwork” for the new series while juggling planning duties for The Handmaid’s Tale‘s final season. “It is a continuation, but it’s more like a separate chapter,” he said of the upcoming show. “The horizons are more limitless.”
Whatever limitless prospects Daisy has in The Testaments may be attributable to June, who will “highlight the importance of hope, courage, solidarity, and resilience” in her final battle against Gilead, per The Handmaid’s Tale‘s season six logline. Hulu also released a short teaser for the season, which sees Moss’ heroine leading an army of red-cloaked warriors against the fascist state. Season 6 premieres April 8 on Hulu.
