Across the seas from Westeros and a galaxy away from Arrakis, a different fantasy saga is unfolding over on Prime Video. TheWheel Of Time—the epic series adapted from Robert Jordan’s (and later Brandon Sanderson’s) literary series of the same name—is entering its third season, and things aren’t looking calm or peaceful on its fictional continent of the Westlands.
In the new season three trailer, the Aes Sedai, Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike), is tormented by dark visions. In every version of the future in which she lives, Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) dies. For him to live, she must die. Meanwhile, Rand is struggling to fulfill his destiny as the Dragon Reborn. “Will he choose the Light or let the Darkness consume him?” the season’s logline asks.
Season three is largely based on The Shadow Rising, the fourth book in Jordan’s series. Prime Video promises this new installment “will take viewers to many new regions and cities… including the vast deserts of the Aiel Waste, the intoxicating and dangerous port city of Tanchico, and the forbidden and fog-shrouded ancient city of Rhuidean, where Rand and Moiraine will both experience life-changing revelations.” While Rand is processing his chosen one angst on one side of the continent, back in his hometown of Two Rivers, his lifelong friend, Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherford), will also “embark on a personal journey, one which will change him forever.”
While The A.V. Club reviewer Kayleigh Dray found that season one took a bit too long to get going, she deemed season two “richer, more engrossing, and just plain better.” Hopefully season three will continue this upward trajectory. The first three episodes of the season will premiere on Prime Video March 13, with new episodes following weekly until the season finale on April 17.
