These animated maps show exactly how Twitter users freaked out during the Oscars

If you watched the Oscars unfold on Twitter, you saw the twin joys of Gary from Chicago and Moonlight’s win reverberate around the internet. We received an email (courtesy of someone at health2blog.com, of all places) that used geotagged data on Twitter to map those moments as they happened, and they provide a weirdly abstracted way to relive those shocks. Here’s the moment that Gary from Chicago and his fiancée met Denzel Washington, using Twitter searches related to that event:

And the view as the entire world lived vicariously through Gary and his fiancée:

The bigger moment was the great Best Picture fuck-up of 2017, in which La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner, instead of Moonlight. In this U.S. map, La La Land tweets are red, and Moonlight tweets are blue:
