Tilda Swinton needs a little break from filmmaking

No, Tilda Swinton is not quitting cinema, but she does want a break. At this year’s Berlinale, the actor will receive the Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement and has already spoken to the press at the festival and addressed the ways the world has gotten way worse lately. Aside from the major horrors—yesterday, the actor condemned greed and colonization—Swinton opines that independent filmmaking has taken a hit since the COVID pandemic

While Swinton’s previous experience was that independent films could take a bit more time to develop on the set, in the current milieu it’s more of a “smash-and-grab” mentality since everyone is worried about financing, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In fairness, Swinton has released about three movies every year since the beginning of 2021, which would probably be fairly “strenuous” no matter how you slice it, but it is undeniable that financial insecurity has gravely altered Hollywood in the era of COVID and strikes. “And I need a break,” she continued. “So I’m going to have one. I’m going to have some peace and quiet to think and figure out what the next 40 years are.”

“I can tell you that when I go home on Monday to Scotland, I’m entering something that I’ve been looking forward to for about 15 years — which is a period of my life when I do something different,” Swinton told the audience in Berlin elsewhere in the press conference. “I can’t quite say what it is, but I can say I’m not shooting a film for the rest of this year. I want more time,” she added. Swinton again clarified that her goal is to have time to really develop projects instead of working at the same clip she’s been working at, so it doesn’t sound like she’ll ultimately be gone too long. Of those projects, she says, “Some are for the cinema, some are not — but I need time.” In the meantime, The Ballad Of A Small Player, in which she will star opposite Colin Farrell, is expected to arrive on Netflix sometime this year.
