Former Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson has released the second song off of his upcoming Bash & Pop album, “Never Wanted To Know.” The song was recorded on April 21, 2016, the same day that Prince Nelson Rodgers died. Musically, the a garage rocker doesn’t nick much from Prince, although it could potentially be a distant cousin to “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man.”

Instead, it finds Stinson taking a more socially conscious turn in his lyrics. (“Shot down, bleeding from his back in the rain / Some kid, they didn’t even know he was eight.”). For its heady subject matter, the tune doesn’t skimp on the anthemic choruses, blistering lead lines, and that deceptively clever wordplay that Stinson has perfected throughout his career with Bash & Pop, Perfect, and solo.

Anything Could Happen—the first Bash & Pop album since 1993—drops on January 20 from Fat Possum records. You can pre-order it on the band’s Pledge Music page, which also offers such unique donor benefits as Tommy Stinson officiating your wedding and Bash & Pop throwing a kegger at your house. The band also just added a run of West Coast dates to its upcoming tour, which kicks off Thursday, January 12 at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis.
