Garage-rock savant Ty Segall has announced a new self-titled album and North American tour for 2017. The debut single, “Orange Color Queen,” is now streaming on Soundcloud. The new album follows 2016’s Emotional Mugger, a scuzzy, sludgy combination of fuzzed-out guitars and Sensational Alex Harvey Band-inspired weirdness. Segall is constantly evolving and devolving his sound, so it’s uncertain what’s to come from each of his solo records or side projects. But if “Orange Color Queen” is any indication, listeners may be in for a more introspective Segall this time around.
The singer and multi-instrumentalist entered the studio with a full band for his latest record, including frequent co-conspirators Emmett Kelley, Mikal Cronin, Charles Moothart, and Ben Boye. The Bowie-esque acoustic chord changes assure Segall is still keeping one foot in ’70s glam, but perhaps maturing just a little bit in songwriting and arranging. There’s also a sweetness in the subject matter and harmonies that recalls Memphis-born anglophiles Big Star, and a just-overdriven-enough guitar solo is the icing on this A.M. pop-influenced cake.
