Weekend Box Office: Escape Room can't keep audiences from flocking to Aquaman

Nipping at its heels like a feisty little guppy, though, was Sony’s by-the-numbers horror movie Escape Room, which pulled in a respectable $18 million on a $9 million budget. As the teens flooded its screens, the kids and parents flocked to Mary Poppins Returns, which came in third with a weekend gross of $15.7 million. That’s a drop of roughly 44% for the musical sequel, serving as a sign that Poppins’ magic umbrella may not keep her afloat for much longer.

Rounding out the top five are Paramount’s mega-fun Bumblebee and Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the latter of which could see a fresh bump next weekend thanks to its Golden Globe win for Best Animated Feature Film on Sunday night. That may also be true for Adam McKay’s Vice, which saw its star, Christian Bale, win a Globe last night for his transformative turn as former Vice President (and actual Satan) Dick Cheney. Right now, McKay’s film is holding its own in the top 10, having dropped only 25% since last week.

Elsewhere, awards darling If Beale Street Could Talk and Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On The Basis Of Sex both saw bumps due to their respective market expansions, and will likely continue to see them as they gear up for bigger expansions in the coming weeks.
