What's on TV this week—The Abandons and Spartacus: House Of Ashur

Welcome to What’s On, our weekly roundup of notable shows and films. Here is what’s happening on TV from Sunday, November 30 to Saturday, December 6. All times are Eastern.

New this week

The New Years (MUBI, Wednesday, 12 a.m., season one premiere)

If you loved Netflix’s One Day, consider giving this romantic drama from filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen (The Beasts) a whirl. The Spanish series chronicles the relationship of Ana and Óscar (Iria del Río and Francesco Carril) over 10 New Year’s Eve celebrations, covering everything from their meet-cute to serious family issues. Look for The A.V. Club‘s review on Wednesday.

The Abandons (Netflix, Thursday, 3 a.m., season one premiere)

Sons Of Anarchy‘s Kurt Sutter cooked up this action-packed Western, which casts two formidable leading ladiesThe X-FilesGillian Anderson and Games Of Thrones‘ Lena Headey—as rivals in the 1850s. The ensemble also features Lucas Till, Aisling Franciosi, Nick Robinson, and Patton Oswalt. The A.V. Club‘s review publishes Thursday.

It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley (HBO, Thursday, 9 p.m.)

As part of HBO’s Music Box series, this Amy Berg-directed documentary digs into one of music’s most enigmatic figures: Jeff Buckley, of the 1994 album Grace and the world’s most haunting cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” In the two-hour-plus project, Buckleywho died by drowning in 1997 at the age of thirtyis remembered by those who knew him well, including Rebecca Moore, Ben Harper, and Aimee Mann.

Spartacus: House Of Ashur (Starz, Friday, 12 a.m., season one premiere)

The sword-and-sandals Spartacus universe expands on Starz fifteen years after the original series debuted. As the title suggests, the sequel centers on Ashur (Nick E. Tremblay)—who, at least in this timeline, didn’t die on Mount Vesuvius all those years back—as he takes control of the gladiator school that once owned him and contends with the merciless world of Roman politics. Lucy Lawless’ Lucretia and Liam McIntyre’s Spartacus also return.

Jay Kelly (Netflix, Friday, 3 a.m.)

Who better to play a famous, aging movie star with George Clooney-level looks and charm than the man himself? In this meta dramedy from Noah Baumbach, the actor’s Jay Kelly reflects on his professional successes and personal failings while traveling through Europe with his devoted manager Ron (Adam Sandler). Check out The A.V. Club‘s review.
