New this week
The New Years (MUBI, Wednesday, 12 a.m., season one premiere)
If you loved Netflix’s One Day, consider giving this romantic drama from filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen (The Beasts) a whirl. The Spanish series chronicles the relationship of Ana and Óscar (Iria del Río and Francesco Carril) over 10 New Year’s Eve celebrations, covering everything from their meet-cute to serious family issues. Look for The A.V. Club‘s review on Wednesday.
The Abandons (Netflix, Thursday, 3 a.m., season one premiere)
Sons Of Anarchy‘s Kurt Sutter cooked up this action-packed Western, which casts two formidable leading ladies—The X-Files‘ Gillian Anderson and Games Of Thrones‘ Lena Headey—as rivals in the 1850s. The ensemble also features Lucas Till, Aisling Franciosi, Nick Robinson, and Patton Oswalt. The A.V. Club‘s review publishes Thursday.
It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley (HBO, Thursday, 9 p.m.)
As part of HBO’s Music Box series, this Amy Berg-directed documentary digs into one of music’s most enigmatic figures: Jeff Buckley, of the 1994 album Grace and the world’s most haunting cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” In the two-hour-plus project, Buckley—who died by drowning in 1997 at the age of thirty—is remembered by those who knew him well, including Rebecca Moore, Ben Harper, and Aimee Mann.
