Actually, Candy Crush doesn’t think it owns the word “candy” anymore
Last month, King, the creator of a highly addictive drug called Candy Crush Saga, tried to trademark the very word “candy,” arguing that there is no longer any candy on the planet that doesn’t remind you of how you got so worked up about level 30 at 2 a.m. that you paid the game five whole dollars just to make it go away.
But today Mashable reports that, fortunately, King has withdrawn its trademark request, perhaps deciding that world domination was enough to sate the candy-crushing gods. But it’s not all lollipop hammers and chocolate bombs: The word is still trademarked in the European Union to prevent other game developers from making similar games. Enjoy your casual usage of the word while it lasts, America.
