After laying dormant for two whole years, the Underworld series is getting a reboot
Step aside, Spider-Man. It looks like somebody’s going to beat your record for the shortest length of time between a movie and its reboot. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Underworld series is getting rebooted, even though its most recent sequel—Underworld: Awakening—just came out in 2012. By contrast, Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man were separated by five years, which is practically a lifetime in Underworld reboot terms.
The Underworld series, for anyone who missed the original or its three sequels, is about the never-ending war between vampires and werewolves. Kate Beckinsale plays Selene—the main vampire protagonist—and Scott Speedman plays her love interest, reprising his role as the vampire/werewolf hybrid character he played on Felicity. Everybody wore tight, black leather. It was very early-2000s.
Priest’s Cory Goodman is writing the script, but we don’t have any specifics yet about how his reboot will change the series. THR points out that the most recent film was actually the most financially successful, so maybe he should just do what that one did. Like, not to sound crazy or anything, but he could even use the same characters and continue the existing story. Or maybe he could just write a totally new vampire movie that isn’t a reboot or a sequel. Is that even possible?
