Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill musical is coming in 2018 with help from Diablo Cody

A couple of years ago, we learned that Alanis Morissette had designs to turn her landmark album Jagged Little Pill into a musical. Now that’s becoming a reality, with the announcement that Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody has written the book for the show, which centers on “a modern and multi-generational family and their complex dynamics, touching on issues of gender identity and race.” So while the music maybe a throwback to the ‘90s the setting seems like it won’t be. (And, no, the entire thing isn’t going to be about Dave Coulier.)

Jagged Little Pill is set to premiere in May 2018 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where it will be directed by Tony-winner Diane Paulus. “The chemistry between all of us is crackling and I feel honored to be diving into these songs again, surrounded by all of this searing talent,” Morissette said in a statement. “Diablo and Diane are already taking these deeply personal songs that are part of my soul’s marrow to a whole other level of hope, freedom and complexity.” Naturally, ”Ironic,” “You Oughta Know,” and “Hand In My Pocket” are among the tracks that will factor into the narrative.
