Last week, we reported that Alex Kurtzman would be stepping in to replace Star Trek: Discovery showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg (who just announced that they’re leaving the show in the midst of production on its second season). According to Deadline, though, that’s just a small part of Kurtzman’s new Star Trek empire. In addition to running Discovery—which he also co-created—Kurtzman has signed on to a five-year deal with CBS that will involve him developing new live-action Star Trek shows, new animated Star Trek shows, and new mini-series projects that could probably be either live-action or animated.
We don’t know what any of his new projects will be, but Deadline says there’s “talk” about one of them being “an eight-episode limited series spin-off.” A separate Deadline story uses some old quotes from Kurtzman and the Discovery cast to theorize that we might be getting a prequel story of some sort about Michelle Yeoh’s Captain Georgiou and/or Jason Isaacs’ Captain Lorca. Rainn Wilson has also indicated that he’d be happy to return as Harry Mudd, the classic Star Trek rogue who he played in Discovery.
Those are just guesses at this point, but Deadline also believes that we’ll hear more about whatever Kurtzman is planning at San Diego Comic-Con next month.
