Amy Poehler to give the Giggly Squad the Broad City treatment

As Amy Poehler ventures further into the world of podcasting, she’s bringing some podcasters further into the world of TV comedy. Deadline reports that Poehler and 30 Rock and Pitch Perfect writer-producer Kay Cannon will produce a new half-hour scripted comedy series for Netflix from Hannah Berner and Paige DeSorbo. Berner and DeSorbo will play “fictionalized versions of themselves as they become the ultimate ride-or-dies, helping each other shed their baggage and emerge as the people they’ve always wanted to be” in New York City, according to a synopsis from Deadline

This premise, of course, sounds quite a bit like Broad City, which followed real-life friends Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson playing fictionalized besties coming into themselves in New York City in the 2010s. This may be more than coincidence; Poehler was also an early fan of Glazer’s and Jacobson’s work, helping shepherd the show to Comedy Central and becoming an executive producer of the series.

In fairness to DeSorbo and Berner, they do have television and comedy bona fides outside of the podcast. The two became friends as cast members on Bravo’s reality show Summer House, and Berner in particular has seen success as a standup coming, opening for Poehler and Tina Fey on the road in 2025. The two of them also appeared as guests on Poehler’s podcast Good Hang, which, per Deadline, is how Poehler came aboard this project. DeSorbo also won the “Allison Williams Cool Girl Award” at last year’s Las Culturista’s Culture Awards, which may not be a real award but at least indicates that Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang think she’s cool, which can carry you reasonably far in this business.
