Stars, they’re just like us.

As any active employee will tell you, getting out of work events requires finesse and an unflappable poker face. An upset stomach or a death in the family will do in a pinch, but there’s nothing like a genuine medical emergency to use as an escape hatch. Andrew Scott knows this all too well. Speaking to Variety on the SAG red carpet, Scott admitted to passing a kidney stone during Laura Dern’s Marriage Story acceptance speech at the 2020 SAG Awards.

“I was beside Phoebe [Waller-Bridge], and Laura Dern had just won best supporting actress, and we were standing up,” Scott said. “I don’t know if anyone has ever experienced having a kidney stone before, but it sends you. The pain is so immediate.”

Despite the press, cameras, and social media detectives in attendance and watching at home, Scott, who was nominated that year for his turn as “Hot Priest” on Fleabag, left without anyone noticing. He was in the back of the room “writhing in pain” before he proved he was the right man for Ripley and escaped in an ambulance. Returning to the SAGs, Scott presented the award for Male Actor in a Drama Series. As of press time, it is unclear whether he made it to the end of the ceremony or left to have his appendix removed.
