Two weeks ago, the ignorant squawks issuing from Utopia signaled the beginning of the 2014-15 TV season, but network schedules won’t truly snap to life until tonight, September 22. In recognition of that snooze-button approach to returning shows and new premieres, TV Club’s own fall lineup has been a little slow to come together this year. Rest assured, however, that we’ll be watching right along with you tonight and every night through May (or whenever the season decided to end in this kooky modern-day TV landscape), offering the Internet’s best television analysis from the most engaged (and frequently funny) critics.
Unfortunately, to make additions, there must also be subtractions, so while we welcome potential new favorites like Gotham, Marry Me, and The Affair, we must bid farewell to old stalwarts like The Vampire Diaries and Once Upon A Time. (Each of which will will receive an additional farewell in a season-premiere review.) It’s all part of The A.V. Club’s continuing efforts to think and write about TV outside of weekly, episodic reviews, efforts you’ll see in new feature types in the coming months, as well as the type of drop-in write ups that we’ve most recently tried with Project Runway. We’re also experimenting with more dual-show reviews, with an approach we first tried with Switched At Birth and The Fosters applied to The Middle and The Goldbergs. We recognize that the ways in which people watch TV are changing, and we hope The A.V. Club’s coverage of the medium can reflect that, within and without TV Club. (As for the TV Club Classic faithful: That feature continues on its reduced schedule, with Lost and Twilight Zone reviews returning soon. Reviews of the Simpsons eighth season—or “Grimey,” as they liked to be called—begin the first Sunday of October.)
