Armie Hammer quietly wraps his next role

Though they may tarnish it, neither sexual violence allegations nor far-right propaganda films have yet stopped the career of Armie Hammer. Deadline reports today that Hammer has just wrapped filming Tokyo Blitz, an action thriller that was actually just filmed in Los Angeles. According to a synopsis, Tokyo Blitz “follows a ruthless Yakuza enforcer (Joey Chase) who’s trying to save his fractured family when he’s drawn into a deadly war for control of Tokyo’s first legal casino, putting him on a collision course with Rick (Armie Hammer), an elite American hitman who never misses his mark.”

Hammer playing an American hitman—one who perhaps resides in a foreign country—should do little to break the association of Citizen Vigilante, his controversial project from this summer that reads a bit like a right-wing fantasy version of Serial Mom. The film garnered quite a bit of attention online, especially after Elon Musk used his personal propaganda platform to draw attention to it, and it was reported that Hammer regretted participating in a film he deemed “hateful” and “disgusting.” Of course, other than the hit man detail, there’s nothing to indicate so far that this movie—written and directed by Garrett Glassell—will be anything like Uwe Boll’s. In any case, Hammer isn’t in a place where he can be especially choosy about his roles, so hopefully Tokyo Blitz is enough to keep him away from Citizen Vigilante 2.
