Avengers: Endgame is back on top at the box office 7 years later

The Encore of the 2019 film surpassed $25 million in the U.S. in its first weekend back.

Avengers: Endgame is back on top at the box office 7 years later

Taylor Swift isn’t the only one who spent the weekend repackaging her old work with a smidge of new material and calling it an encore. Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame Encore had its first weekend back in theaters and, as will probably be the case with Swift too, no new project was a match for it where sales were concerned. The new-old Marvel release debuted with $26 million domestically this weekend, not to mention another $60 million abroad. It’s certainly a pretty impressive haul for a rerelease (albeit one with a few minutes of new footage connecting it to Marvel’s next big movie) which probably means Avengers: Doomsday will do just fine when it hits cinemas in December. 

Resident Evil managed to hold the number two spot ahead of three truly new releases, with the Zach Cregger-directed movie adding another $23 million to its domestic total. The film crossed the $100 million threshold at the domestic box office this weekend and is just shy of reaching $200 million internationally. Following behind was the Brad Pitt-led survival thriller Heart Of The Beast, which brought in $20 million. Nipping at its heels was Primetime, which banked about $19.2 million. Per Variety, the Robert Pattinson-starring movie about Chris Hansen and To Catch A Predator earned A24’s third-highest opening, behind Backrooms ($81.4 million) and Civil War ($25.5 million). Following behind that was the latest DreamWorks animated movie, Forgotten Island, which made $12.8 million in the states. Take a look at the whole top ten below, courtesy of Box Office Mojo.
