Bachelor Party also becoming a sitcom, consummating TV’s marriage to old movies

TV can be such a pain, what with all those shows not based on previously existing properties. Luckily, ABC has other ideas. Like many of us—and especially like Fox—ABC likes to kick up its feet, look up at the sky, and dream about all of the movies starring Tom Hanks that would be so much better if only they weren’t movies and didn’t star Tom Hanks. Unlike many of us, ABC decided to make that dream a reality.

On the heels of Fox’s Big adaptation, Deadline reports that Bachelor Party has been picked up by ABC as a put pilot, with New Girl writer-producers J.J. Philbin and Josh Malmuth transforming the Hanks-starring 1984 debauchery fest into an anthology series following a different wedding party every season. Assuming the pilot goes to series, the show will focus on the fallout of a co-ed bachelor/bachelorette party for each wedding. It promises to explore marriage and relationships through three couples: “one about to get married, another recently divorced and a third just falling in love.”

Bachelor Party, in a sense, will really be a symbol of TV’s own upcoming nuptials—specifically, the marriage of all future television shows to movies from the past 30 years. Given the recently announced TV series remakes of Marley & Me, Monster-In-Law, Minority Report, Real Genius, and Problem Child, and now the double dose of Hanks films, it’s clear television has fallen in love with its old VHS collection, and it wants the world to know. Soon, each season will give us endless exciting opportunities to experience their wedded bliss.
