Mary finally writes her story in The Other Bennet Sister trailer

Sure, we all like to think of ourselves as the Elizabeth or Kitty of our stories, but more often than not, we’re Mary, the plain, introverted, other Bennet sister from Jane Austen’s Pride And Prejudice. Neither pretty nor funny, as Austen rudely wrote her, she also doesn’t get much of a chance to develop into a real, fully-rounded character in the author’s telling. But with BritBox’s upcoming series, The Other Bennet Sister, Mary finally gets to shake off Mrs. Bennet’s social and marital expectations and be herself for a change. The Other Bennet Sister tells Pride And Prejudice from Mary’s perspective, giving her the spotlight that she’s been deprived of for more than two centuries.

Here’s the BBC’s synopsis

“Unlike her sisters, Mary isn’t your typical period drama heroine. She is awkward, anxious, preachy, full of facts, a terrible singer… overlooked by her mother and seemingly destined to an empty dance card for the rest of her life… until Mary takes matters into her own hands. The Other Bennet Sister gives Mary Bennet the epic love story nobody predicted for her, taking her from her family home in Meryton to the soirees of Regency London and the peaks and vales of the Lake District – all in search of independence, romance and, most elusive of all, self-love and acceptance.”

The Other Bennet Sister stars Call The Midwife‘s Ella Bruccoleri as Mary, Gavin & Stacy‘s Ruth Jones as Mrs. Bennet, and Oscar-nominee Richard E. Grant as Mr. Bennet.

The series streams May 6 on BritBox.
