Bill Murray is being inducted into the Caddie Hall Of Fame
You’ve all been asking for it, and now it’s finally here: The A.V. Club’s annual report on the Caddie Hall Of Fame. Last year’s ceremony was a real hole-in-one, with beloved caddie mentor Greg Kunkel taking home the bronze statue of a guy carrying a golf bag for someone else, and it sounds like this year was easily on par with that thanks to an especially exciting group of new Hall Of Famers. As reported by Golf.com (via Vanity Fair), the Professional Caddie Association has decided to honor the golf-related work of none other than famous actor Bill Murray and his four brothers (Brian, Joel, Tito, and Jermaine).
The Murray brothers are obviously not lifelong professional caddies, but they did all work as caddies while growing up in Illinois. Because of that, the Caddie Hall Of Fame most likely honored them as what the official website calls “Junior Caddies,” which refers to “prominent individuals who have used their caddie experiences as a steppingstone for future success.” So, interestingly, it sounds like this has nothing to do with the fact that Bill Murray famously played a caddie in Caddyshack, and is actually more about how he used to be a caddie and now he’s famous. That’s how seriously the Professional Caddie Association takes this; it isn’t an attention-grabbing tribute to a classic golf movie, it’s really just a nod to some guys who used to be caddies and became successful in Hollywood.
Joel Murray tweeted a photo of his brothers with their statues (which really are of a guy holding someone else’s golf bags):
There’s obviously no word yet on who will join the Hall Of Fame next year, but we’ve got a good feeling about little Brian Benson at Sunshine Lake Country Club in Ohio. He doesn’t say much, but he always carries the clubs with a smile and doesn’t judge the golfers when they say sexist things to the girls bringing drinks. Good luck, Brian!
