Jean Smart goes 5 for 5 at the Emmys

Jean Smart made Emmys history tonight, taking home her fifth consecutive award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. She finished Hacks with a perfect run, as the series concluded with its fifth season earlier this year. The win gives Smart her eighth Emmy win, having earned two Emmys for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance in Frasier, and an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance in Samantha Who?

In her speech, Smart thanked a number of people, including her children, but dedicated her award to the Hacks creators Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky, and Paul W. Down. Smart finishes her Hacks run as the first performer to achieve a perfect run in this category. Julia Louis-Dreyfus did ultimately win more awards for her performance in Veep, but didn’t manage to win for all seven seasons of the show. Candice Bergen also won five Emmys for Murphy Brown, though they were non-consecutive and that show ran for 11 seasons. Of course, who’s to say whether any of these things are more impressive than another, but it’s a fun little Emmys fact.
