Bill Murray lends further credence to Bill Murray stories by crashing a bachelor party
It’s hard to pinpoint when Bill Murray decided to adopt the do-gooder persona of his Groundhog Day character Phil Connors and just wander from place to place, doling out shots and playing pick-up games of kickball, but this past Memorial Day weekend served as another opportunity to prove his status as a wandering mystic. A group of 20-odd friends from Boston College communed for a bachelor party at a steakhouse, one that Murray just so happened to be dining at. One of the attendees told the tale of how Murray wound up at the party to Deadspin:
Over Memorial Day weekend, 20 of my buddies from Boston College got together in Charleston for our friend EJ’s bachelor party. At one point during dinner at a steakhouse, one guy goes to the bathroom downstairs and sees Bill Murray sitting with some people with a fishing vest on. We talked to the waiter to see if we could send him some drinks, to which Bill declined. One of my buddies then went down and asked if he’d come up and say a few words for EJ and got a “No thanks.” My buddy comes back up dejected and tells us it’s not going to happen. Two minutes later, Bill fucking Murray walks into the room and gives this speech.
The video of Murray’s appearance can be found on Deadspin, but the clip sees him peppering in advice and landing a few jokes, all before triumphantly hoisting the groom-to-be on his shoulders. There’s no account of what Bill Murray did after this video was filmed, but it’s entirely likely that he strolled around town until he found a Bar Mitzvah at which he could give a toast.
