Telling reporters that he’d been on vacation in Japan when he got the call from DCU head James Gunn on the “bat phone” (not sure how Blue Beetle got his hands on one of those) about Blue Beetle’s imminent return in 2027’s Superman sequel Man Of Tomorrow, the Cobra Kai star stated, “I’m so excited for people to see where Blue Beetle ends up.”
As fans of the charming but underperforming 2023 film know, where Jamie Reyes’ Beetle wound up was surrounded by his loving (and surprisingly kick-ass) working class family as they relish their victory over Susan Sarandon’s villainous Victoria Kord, with a mid-credits scene hinting strongly that long-missing original Blue Beetle (aka Victoria’s brother Ted Kord) was actually alive somewhere.
It’s unclear just how much of Jamie’s story will get fleshed out in what’s already looking like an overcrowded superhero blockbuster. Man of Tomorrow promises the return of everyone from David Corenswet’s Supes and Nicolas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, to the whole Justice Gang (Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, Isabella Merced’s Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan’s Metmorpho), plus Lanterns‘ Aaron Pierre as Green Lantern John Stewart, a new big bad in Lars Eidinger’s Braniac, Rachel Brosnihan’s Lois Lane and the Daily Planet crew, Ma and Pa Kent, and more.
But that’s as it should be for Blue Beetle, whose identity (or identities, should the non-superpowered Ted squeeze into the narrative somehow) as the little C-Lister who could infuses his character with a relatability that’s made him an enduring cult favorite amidst all DC’s big guns. And with higher-profile actors from the Snyder-verse on the outside looking in on Gunn’s reenergized DC universe, there’s Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle, somehow surviving to fight another day.
