Bono is sorry people didn’t appreciate his beautiful iTunes vision

In the same passive-aggressive fashion with which iTunes allowed users to reject the sublime gift of U2’s artistic genius, Bono has apologized for trying to share his vision with a world not yet ready to appreciate it. Bono, Edge and friends sat down for a Facebook video Q&A session yesterday, and talk soon turned to that time U2 automatically deposited its new album in people’s iTunes. In a masterful display of the non-apology that could teach his fellow celebrities a thing or two, Bono responded:

“Oops. I’m sorry about that. I had this beautiful idea— might have got carried away with ourselves. Artists are prone to that kind of thing — a drop of megalomania, a touch of generosity, a dash of self-promotion and deep fear that these songs, that we poured our life into over the last few years mightn’t be heard. There’s a lot of noise out there. I guess we got a little noisy ourselves to get through it.”

Bono then went on to say that there are millions of starving children in the world who would love to receive a free copy of the new U2 album on their iTunes, if they even had iTunes, and all we do is sit around and complain about getting free things while he’s out there trying to make a difference, and how many humanitarian awards have we won lately, huh? (Okay, he didn’t say that, but he was probably thinking it.)
