Bret McKenzie is working on a Labyrinth-like musical with more puppets
Having enjoyed great, Oscar-winning success putting songs in the mouths of Muppets, Bret McKenzie is obviously into doing more of that: Not only did he return to do the music for the upcoming Muppets Most Wanted, he tells Collider he’s now working on an as-yet-untitled script for “a comedy musical with singing dragons and monsters and stuff,” like an all-Catherine Zeta-Jones version of Rock Of Ages. Or, in McKenzie’s own words, “a fairy tale comedy musical, sort of akin to Labyrinth,” referring to the Jim Henson film where David Bowie bewitches Jennifer Connelly with his magic balls. McKenzie also likens it to “a mixture of The Muppets and The Princess Bride,” in case that’s not enough beloved childhood entertainment references for you. Anyway, he’s currently halfway through writing it, with help from Muppets and Flight Of The Conchords director James Bobin, and all the way to stirring hopes for Jemaine Clement to reprise his Bowie impression, perhaps this time in a pair of bulge-enhancing leggings.
