Buddy returns to theaters for a sing-along

The sleeper-hit horror film about a magically murderous unicorn is getting a sing-along version next month.

Buddy returns to theaters for a sing-along

Audiences may have said Death To Smoochy when Danny DeVito’s kids’ TV satire hit theaters in 2002, but they are more than happy to sing along with Buddy. The surreal horror-comedy about a killer children’s TV show has shown some surprising legs since opening in late August. Sticking around the top 10 for the last four weeks, the film has made a cool $25 million, which is hardly too shabby for a movie about a Barney-esque mascot killing little kids for the crime of not wanting to play along. It’s currently Saban Films’ highest-grossing film ever, and Roadside Attractions’ third highest-grossing, nudging Judy out of the spotlight. Those who love Buddy love him, and apparently they love him enough to warrant a sing-along re-release.

Starting Friday, October 2, all those little buddies who feel scared so they can be brave will be able to sing their little hearts out with their favorite unicorn. Buddy: The Sing-Along Version is exactly what it sounds like: A version of the film with on-screen lyrics and a bouncing star to follow along with. According to a joint statement from Roadside Attractions co-presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff and Saban Films co-President Jonathan Saba, audiences are “already singing and dancing in the aisles. Buddy: The Sing-Along Version is really just catching up with what these amazing fans are already doing — and we think they’re going to love it.” We’ll say this: they get 10 points for originality. Of all the sing-along releases we’ve seen in recent years, this is probably the first to feature multiple child deaths and Clint Howard in a little boy’s cowboy costume.

Buddy: The Sing-Along Version opens in theaters on October 2.
