Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood to play Gerald’s Game for Netflix

Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood have been tapped to star in Netflix’s film adaptation of Gerald’s Game, the 1992 bestselling novel from Stephen King. Development of the series started way back in 2014, and, as with most King adaptations, the project floated around development purgatory for a while before finally moving forward. Now, though, with Gugino and Greenwood locked in, it’s safe to say Gerald’s Game is really happening. Hush and Oculus director Mike Flanagan will direct from a script he co-wrote with Oculus collaborator Jeff Howard.

Gerald’s Game follows Gerald (Greenwood) and Jessie Burlingame (Gugino), who decide to spend their weekend getaway at their summer home by playing elaborate adult games. After being handcuffed to her bedposts, Jessie is all “I’m over this,” but then Gerald suddenly dies, abruptly ending the game. (Damn it, Gerald! The game was your idea in the first place!) In the wake of the tragedy, Jessie is left handcuffed, trapped, and alone, with nothing but a hungry stray dog and the voices in her head to keep her company. To make matters even more hellish, painful memories from Jessie’s childhood flood her mind. Gerald’s game is not a very fun one.

Gugino recently starred in Cameron Crowe’s Roadies, which was canceled after one season, as well as Wayward Pines, and has a tendency of being the best part of most things she’s in. Greenwood recently starred as Gil Garcetti in The People Vs. OJ Simpson. Henry Thomas, Carel Struycken, Kate Diegel, and Chiara Aurelia also star in Gerald’s Game, which Flanagan described as his “dream project for nearly 20 years.” His next movie Ouija: Origin Of Evil, a prequel to 2014’s Ouija, comes out this weekend.
