CBS buys legal dramedy about feuding sisters from Jason Katims

According to Deadline, CBS has emerged victorious in a three-network battle for a new hourlong project from Jason Katims. Earlier this year, Katims’ medical drama Pure Genius was placed on the upcoming CBS fall schedule. The new legal project—which is currently untitled—has received a script commitment with penalty. Written by TV writer and playwright Annie Weisman (Suburgatory and Desperate Housewives), the legal dramedy centers on two sisters with opposing political views who must come together to save their father’s law firm after a scandal gets him locked up. Weisman will executive produce alongside Katims and Michelle Lee.

Weisman previously worked with Katims on the Hulu drama The Path—which was created by Katims collaborator Jessica Goldberg—and NBC’s About A Boy. With Katims involved, we can probably expect plenty of great family drama from the new legal series, as well as close-ups on hands. Katims previously created the brilliant but underappreciated Parenthood and also executive produced Friday Night Lights. With Pure Genius on the way, it looked like Katims was briefly getting out of the family drama game, but a show about two disparate sisters who have to unite for the good of the family? That’s right up his alley.

With The Path coming back for a second season, Pure Genius set to hit CBS, a new comedy pilot called Mating brewing at Showtime, and this sister-centered legal show in the works, Katims and his production company will be running a lot of television this fall. But does True Jack have an entire night of the week named for it? Only Shondaland maintains that level of TV dominance—for now.
