In 2023, Celine Song’s film Past Lives was ranked the best of the year by The A.V. Club. In 2024, her husband Justin Kuritzkes’ film Challengers was ranked the best of the year by The A.V. Club. So last weekend when Kuritzkes was at the Writers Guild Awards, we had one question for him: who would take the crown next? “She’s got the next movie on, so we’ll see,” Kuritzkes told us.
Well, we won’t have to wait too much longer. A24 shared this morning that Song’s sophomore feature Materialists will officially bow on June 13. Starring Dakota Jonhson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, the film’s logline reads: “A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.” The project also stars Zoë Winters, Marin Ireland, Dasha Nekrasova, and Louisa Jacobson, and was filmed in New York in the summer of 2024.
Song previously mentioned how “impossible” it was to shoot Past Lives in the city. “It’s probably the most expensive, and it’s hellish because you never know what to expect, because there’s so many people [who] live here and New Yorkers don’t care if [you’re] shooting a movie,” she told Deadline in 2024. Apparently, it wasn’t so impossible as to not give it another go with Materialists. In any case, we’ll be able to see Song’s latest work in just over three months.
