Chance The Rapper hopes Trump isn’t actually “going to war with Chicago”

Chance The Rapper and Chicago Bulls player Jimmy Butler recently did a joint interview with The Undefeated (via Pitchfork), and though the discussion primarily revolved around the impact they’re hoping to have in Chicago, they eventually landed on the topic of Donald Trump. In January, Trump tweeted that he’d “send in the Feds” if Chicago didn’t fix “the horrible ‘carnage’ going on,” which, like most Trump statements, seemed to be more about making noise than actually doing anything.

The Undefeated asked Chance about the tweet, and he said that he hopes Trump means he’s going to use his power to fix the city’s budget “in terms of schooling and houses,” because otherwise it sounds like he’s “going to war with Chicago.”

Here’s Chance’s full statement:

I hope he’s coming in to do some type of federal overturn of our state and city budgets in terms of schooling and housing. I’m tired of n*****s talkin’ about Chicago like it’s a Third World country. Like, that it’s not a place of booming business with a very successful downtown and all types of new development. It sounds like he was announcin’ he was going to war with Chicago. I don’t like to look at shit through that lens.

It’s an optimistic sentiment that seems built on Chance maintaining his sanity more than actually believing Trump will do good, and he expanded on it a bit more in an included video clip:

On Sunday night, Chance won Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance, and Best New Artist at the Grammys.
