Charlie Brooker goes from Black Mirror to Blackmere in first look at new Netflix show

Charlie Brooker, the creator of the sci-fi series that inspired stoners the world over to stare at their reflection in their phone and say, “Ohhhh,” is finally moving away from twisted tales of tech dystopia. But not too far away. With a simple trade of some vowels, the Black Mirror creator introduced the world to Blackmere (which kind of sounds like Black Mirror said very quickly or with a thick Scottish accent) this morning. Though, per Netflix’s in-house fan site, Tudum, the title is a mystery only solved by this hint: “say it slowly.” So we can assume this is a new Black Mirror spin-off starring a murderers’ row of British actors, including Paddy Considine, Rory Kinnear, Barbarian‘s Georgina Campbell, and Lena Headey. It’s a cast that raises yet another question: How has Rory Kinnear not appeared in a George R.R. Martin HBO show yet?

So what is Blackmere about? Well, Netflix describes it as “an absurd comedy disguised as an incredibly serious crime thriller.” The series follows “tormented detective” John Blackmere (Considine) looking to avenge his partner’s death and catch a “ritualistic serial killer before they run out of victims.” The synopsis also warns “contains blood and frowning,” so viewer discretion is advised. In a statement last year, Brooker said, “Please watch my show. I am begging you.”
