Claire Danes is pretty loyal to a good showrunner.

Television’s insidious revival culture is taking a swerve with this one: Claire Danes and Winnie Holzman are reuniting, but not for more My So-Called Life. Instead, the duo known for their seminal entry into the teen TV pantheon are working on something brand new, a refreshing change of pace from an industry addicted to “established IP.” Rather than head down that well-trodden road, they’re developing a new drama at HBO, according to Variety

Holzman hinted at this project on the red carpet for the Writers Guild Awards this past weekend when asked about the idea of a So-Called revival. “It’s interesting that you’re asking me that. I am writing something that I’m hoping to do with Claire,” she teased. “It’s not a reboot in the traditional sense, but I think Claire Danes and I back together would be a kind of version of that.”

That “something” is apparently called The Applebaum Curse, which is being vaguely billed as an “ongoing one-hour drama series about a dysfunctional family with Claire Danes as the lead role.” Not much to go on, but it’s Danes and Holzman, what more do you need to know? The show is still in the development stages, but Variety reports that Danes will also serve as an executive producer while Holzman will be credited as writer, EP, and showrunner.

Danes has had a plentiful television career, most recently having been nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for 2022’s Fleishman Is In Trouble, and she’s also loyal. She has a separate project in the works at Netflix from her Homeland showrunner Howard Gordon—another non-revival reunion. Meanwhile, Holzman is having a great year after co-writing the screenplay for Wicked with Dana Fox. (Holzman wrote the book for the original Broadway musical.) With all of their separate success, this reunion blessedly doesn’t carry the same stench of desperation that some of the television re-teaming projects do, so things are at least kicking off on a good foot!
