A "Clone Saga" TV show is in the works (yes, that one)

The Nineties are alive, for better or worse, in the planned Spider-Man-adjacent TV series.

As Prime Video’s Emmy-winning Spider-Noir gets swept up in yesterday’s cobwebs, the streamer is already prepping a new live-action Spider-Verse TV series. Per Deadline, a new Spider-centric series is “closing in on an order” and will again focus on Ben Reilly, only this time Sony’s choice for the spider-lead makes a sick kind of sense: The series is based on Marvel Comics’ historically derided, nostalgically tolerated “Clone Saga” event series from the 1990s, which debuted Reilly, the most prominent Spider-Man clone, to the world. “Most prominent” is used deliberately here, as the “Clone Saga” gave birth to many, many other Spider-clones, which naturally kicked up a lot of Spider-drama for Marvel’s Spider-line, which Sony no doubt hopes to tap into with this new series. To that end, the series is expected to also focus on Kaine Parker, the first and, as befits the era in which he spawned, darker Spider-clone. 

Deadline warns readers that while this “Clone Saga” TV show (we can’t believe we just wrote that) might draw on the Nineties comics for ideas here and there, they should prepare for “significant changes” in the series, written by Kelvin Yu, the creator of American Born Chinese, and produced by Sony’s Amy Pascal and Spider-Verse‘s Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The vertical also reports “conflicting information” concerning the substance of the series (naturally, given that it has yet to secure a greenlight), with some saying the show is about Ben and Kaine “grappling” with their clone identities as other clones pop up out of the woodwork, like so many spiders from an abandoned tool shed. Others say Ben and Kaine’s “origins as clones” could be reimagined as new identities. Either way, this sounds like the two Spider-clones could be teaming up in a complex superhero situation à la Lanterns, while talking around their Spider-origins—and the Spider-Man whose genes gave them life—like Sony’s widely derided Spider-villain solo movies.  

Whatever form it ultimately takes, this “Clone Saga” TV show, like Spider-Noir before it, continues Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television’s multi-title deal to produce Spider-themed TV content and is expected to debut on the Amazon-owned MGM+ platform. A Prime Video release will thwip into action shortly thereafter.
