The viral spate of clown sightings in 2016 will somehow be stretched into a doc.

Hulu takes on Clown Panic in trailer for new documentary

Ten years out, 2016 nostalgia is in full swing, but those who lived through the year may recall how it was common to call it the “worst year ever” at the time. Prince and David Bowie died, we got the first real taste of the specific flavor of political hell in which we still live, and there were sightings of creepy clowns across the land. It’s the latter event that is the subject of Hulu’s newest documentary Clown Panic and, frankly, it’s about time. We’ve had two Fyre Fest documentaries since then, and that happened a year after the clown sightings. 

Off the bat, though, it’s unclear how seriously we’re meant to take a documentary about what is more or less a meme. Sure, the police did get involved at some points during what the trailer tells us was an “epidemic,” but there were a whole lot of people, from college students to content creators to clowns of varying levels of professionalism, who were in on the joke. Frankly, stretching this event into a documentary-length story seems like it may be a challenge, but hopefully it can answer the one question that’s persisted for the last 10 years: Were these actual  clowns, or people dressed up as one? 

Clown Panic premieres on Hulu on October 12.
