Introducing Endless Mode: A New Games & Anime Site from Paste
Hollywood’s baffling inability to capitalize on the success of 2018 rom-com hit Crazy Rich Asians—which has now encompassed two separate, and both apparently stalled, attempts at making sequel or spin-off movies—certainly isn’t stopping the powers that be from trying again. Deadline reports that Warner Bros. Discovery is now pushing forward with plans to try to adapt the franchise to television; specifically, Max has now set up a development room for a streaming series based on the books of author Kevin Kwan, and headed up by Adele Lim, who co-wrote the 2018 film.
Lim will serve as showrunner for the series, while director Jon M. Chu—who spent a couple of years trying to develop sequels China Richa Girlfriend and Rich People Problems before moving on to his current business of making very expensive, very Oscar-nominated musicals—will serve as an executive producer. (Last year, we also learned that Chu was mashing-up some of his past projects, with news that he’d be directing a stage musical adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians for Broadway.) It’s not clear, from the current description, whether the show intends to go back and re-adapt Kwan’s original 2013 novel, or pick up where the movie left off; similarly, Deadline notes that while there have been “unofficial conversations” with the movie’s cast, which included Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Lisa Lu, Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeoh, about possibly coming back, nothing’s been put down on paper. (The report also states that there is “no creative direction” for the series at present, so, as far as we can tell, this whole thing is still at the “Crazy Rich Asians TV show, figure out what that is and get back to us” stage.)
