So, Crystal Lake is doing well

Nice news for prestige TV horror-heads: Crystal Lake, Brad Caleb Kane’s Friday The 13th prequel series, is doing quite well, according to new Nielsen figures. The A24 series racked up an impressive 1.3 billion watch minutes in its first 11 days of streaming, making it the fourth most-watched scripted original series on Peacock. Deadline noted that, when divided by the series’ 398 total minutes (across eight episodes, all released together), those numbers come to an estimated 3.3 million views, putting Crystal Lake just behind other successful Peacock original scripted series, The Best Man: The Final Chapters, All Her Fault, and the first season of The Five Star Weekend, which is no doubt mighty company to be in. Deadline also reports that the most recent Nielsen data for the week of October 19 shows Crystal Lake ranked as the third-highest streaming original series and first-season series.

Crystal Lake has also seemingly whipped up a social media frenzy since its Peacock debut on October 15, with Sprout Social reporting 1.8 billion impressions for the slasher series in a single day and over 7.6 million video views over eleven days. That just goes to show viewers’ sustained interest in horror TV during the Halloween season (go figure!) and a willingness to invest in the sad, misunderstood story of the homicidal mother-son duo Jason and Pamela Voorhees, especially when they’re portrayed so well by Callum Vinson and Linda Cardellini. While noting that the show “pushes a plethora of ideas” that “don’t always seamlessly blend,” The A.V. Club‘s Saloni Gajjar was generally positive about the series, calling it “a gory ride.”
