Introducing Endless Mode: A New Games & Anime Site from Paste
Another season of Dark Winds is blowing into town. AMC is betting big on the Navajo Nation-set noir; the network just renewed the thriller for a fourth season ahead of its upcoming season three premiere. “When we greenlit the first season of Dark Winds, we saw the potential for an authentic and long-running franchise that could live alongside the worlds we were building around The Walking Dead and Anne Rice,” Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, said in a statement. “That is exactly what this cast and creative team delivered, and the fans have responded.”
Regardless of this franchising promise (or threat), it’s exciting that series creator Graham Roland will be able to continue his story. Based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels, Dark Winds follows three officers of the Navajo Tribal Police, Lt. Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten), tasked with solving mysteries on their reservation as it’s besieged by increasingly violent crimes in the 1970s. Season three, which premieres March 9, picks up six months after the events of season two and follows Joe and Jim as they investigate the disappearance of two boys. Meanwhile, Bernadette stumbles on a “conspiracy involving human and drug smuggling with far-reaching implications” 500 miles away on Border Patrol.
Season four, which will begin filming this March in Santa Fe, will also see McClarnon make his directorial debut. “I’m looking forward to exploring and inhabiting the character of Joe Leaphorn once again in Season 4, and I’m excited to make my directorial debut on a show that means so much to me,” he said in a statement. “I’m… thrilled to be spending time with this wonderful cast and crew whom I have grown to love.” Season four will debut on AMC and AMC+ in 2026.
