Dave Bautista would like to get back into the superhero/supervillain game… just not that one.

This is per an interview the Dune actor gave to ComicBook.com this week, while promoting his upcoming project In The Lost Lands. “Drax is completely closed to me,” Bautista said, referencing his grey-skinned battle maniac from James Gunn’s three Guardians Of The Galaxy movies. “But I do wanna be in that world,” Bautista added. “I’m a fan of that world, I’m a fan of comic books and that whole universe. Marvel, DC, I just wanna be in it. I made that known to James, I made that known to the Russo brothers. Personally, I talked to them, all of them, and told them, ‘Don’t count me out. If there’s a character that I’d be right for and that you want me for, man, I’d be totally open-minded to it.'”

To be fair, Bautista wasn’t attacking the character of Drax specifically—although he has, in the past, called it a “silly performance,” and told interviewers that it “ran its course.” His point was more that there’s really only one person he wants writing the character if he’s going to be playing him, and since that one person is currently the co-head of of making movies for the Distinguished Competition, he probably isn’t going to be writing any more Drax-based projects any time soon. (In the past, there was reportedly a little weirdness over Gunn’s Guardians characters ending up in the hands of different Marvel writers and directors, notably in the last two Avengers movies, at least in part because his cast members have been so fervently loyal to him.) Bautista previously suggested he might be interested in pulling a Robert Downey Jr., saying he’d like to return to comic book movies as a bad guy: “I’d love to have the opportunity to play, like, an ominous villain in the superhero universe.”
