David Simon responds to Attorney General's call for more of The Wire in typical David Simon fashion

Remember earlier this month when Attorney General Eric Holder, according to his constitutionally guaranteed powers, issued an edict demanding that David Simon and Ed Burns get to work immediately on more episodes of The Wire? ’Twas all in good fun, and now David Simon has provided a very David Simon-y comeback: “The Attorney-General's kind remarks are noted and appreciated,” he said in a statement. “I've spoken to Ed Burns and we are prepared to go to work on season six of The Wire if the Department of Justice is equally ready to reconsider and address its continuing prosecution of our misguided, destructive and dehumanizing drug prohibition.” He continued, noting that current drug policies are “nothing more or less than a war on our underclass” that is “succeeding only in transforming our democracy into the jailingest nation on the planet.” So if Holder hypothetically accepts Simon’s terms and does away with drug prosecution, what, exactly, would season six of The Wire be about? Traffic violations and petty theft? Yeah, that’s okay. [via Vulture]
