Diablo Cody says Jennifer's Body 2 will demonstrate its title demon's

Last year, we reported that Diablo Cody was getting the (Satanically inclined boy) band back together, announcing her intention to make a sequel to her 2009 cult film Jennifer’s Body—plans that Cody has described this week as “imminent.” Talking on the Petticoat Revolution podcast, Cody revealed not only that she’s gearing up to return to the story of teen-girl-turned-flesh-eating-succubus Jennifer Check, but that she’s hoping this new view of the character will make audiences more “sympathetic” to her.

“Jennifer is a sympathetic character for me, before and after the transformation,” Cody notes in the interview. ““I mean, she is very isolated, she’s very lonely, she’s very insecure. Everybody remembers Jennifer when she’s like, ‘I am a god,’ or when she’s at her most radiant and at her most powerful. But people forget about these moments in the movie where she’s like a shell of herself, she’s just exsanguinated almost.” Although she’s remaining tight-lipped about plot details—which feels important, given how the first movie ended—Cody added “one fun thing” to the discussion of the sequel. Cautioning that “I can’t talk about it too much,” she stated that, “I felt like in the new movie, I was able to explore even more about why Jennifer is sympathetic and what she’s been through. And there is absolutely, to me, a loneliness and a poignancy to that character that people don’t always recognize.”

Although Deadline has apparently confirmed that Cody is developing the Jennifer’s Body 2 sequel at 20th Century Fox, actual details about the project are pretty much nil. That includes the all-important matter of casting—although stars Amanday Seyfried and Megan Fox have both expressed an interest in returning to the film’s universe nearly two decades later. For her part, Cody was complimentary toward Fox’s work in the original film in the Petticoat Revolution interview, saying that she successfully captured both the more confidently monstrous and human and lonely aspects of the character.
